KIVA

What is Kiva
Kiva allows people to lend out money via the Internet to low-income people in over 80 countries. Microfinance institutions, social businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations around the world are allowed to post profiles of qualified local entrepreneurs on its website. Kiva’s mission is to connect people through lending to ease poverty. The voluntary organization was founded in October 2005 by Matt Flannery and Jessica Jackley. After its first anniversary in October 2006, Kiva reached $1 million in facilitated. Kiva has continued to grow and expand.
We started this project with Kiva because we care about these people in the developing countries, and want to contribute and help them, by lending them 25$. Hopefully, this will make their (or his, in our case) food production rates higher, and in the end – more income for him.
José Arístides
We chose to lend money to José Arístides because we believe in his work with coffee, corn, and bean crops. The risk rating is at 4*, which we consider safe. His main objective is to feed his family, but hopefully, he will grow even more food. Arístides has a wife and nine children. Five of them live away from home. Arístides has worked in agriculture since he was 14 years old, and his inspiration and teacher was his father. He needs the loan to collect coffee, corn and bean crops. We think it’s possible for Arístides to grow even more food with his total loan on 350$, and are looking positive about his future.
His investment plan is to hire someone to help him harvest his crops and expand his business. Regardless if we get our money back, this is an investment we support, because it supports a good cause.
El Salvador
It is the smallest country in Central America. It is also the most densely populated country in central America. It has a population of approximately 6.4 million, consisting largely of Mestizos (person combined of European and American descent) of European and indigenous American descent.
It was populated by the Lencaand Maya and was conquered by the Spanish Empire. The country achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and became a part of the first Mexican empire. Became a part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. El Salvador became independent in 1898, following a decade of coups and revolts. The economic inequality resulted in a terrible war (1972-1992) between the military-led government and left-wing guerrilla groups.
El Salvador’s economy is historically dominated by agriculture, beginning with the indigo plant, followed by coffee. By the early 20th century, this accounted for 90 percent of export earnings. In later years, they’ve worked on diversifying the economy by opening trade and financial links and expanding the manufacturing sector. The official currency of El Salvador became the U.S. dollar in 2001, replacing the colon currency. As of 2010, El Salvador ranks 12th among Latin American countries in terms of the Human Development Index and fourth in Central America. The country has an ongoing struggle with high rates of poverty, inequality, and crime.

Dear President-elect Donald Trump...

Dear President-elect Donald Trump, have you seen the movie Before the Flood? It’s a documentary featuring Leonardo Dicaprio, and it’s about the dangers of global warming and what we need to do in order to stop it. In the movie, Leonardo Dicaprio travels the world and shows us how far global warming has gone. In the movie, we learn that 97% of scientist believe that climate change is real and that it is caused by humans. Even though such a large number of scientists agree on this issue, over half of congress say they believe that climate change is a hoax. The US is one of the biggest emitters of fossil fuels and greenhouse gasses in the world. The US needs to set an example, and reduce the amount of fossil fuel spendings and lean towards renewable resources. This is why it is so important that the president-elect takes global warming seriously, and we urge you to look away from your political interests and focus on the importance of preserving the earth for future generations.

Dear President-elect Donald trump, according to New York times, global warming may indeed be the sharpest example of how policy in Washington will change under your administration.
-You have called human-caused climate change a “hoax”. Here is one of you tweets: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” On December 30, 2015, you told the crowd at a rally in Hilton Head, S.C., "Obama's talking about all of this with the global warming and … a lot of it's a hoax. It's a hoax. I mean, it's a money-making industry, okay? It's a hoax, a lot of it."
-You have also already vowed to “cancel” last year's Paris climate agreement, which commits more than 190 countries to reduce their releases of planet-warming carbon dioxide pollution, and to dismantle the Clean Power Plan, Mr. Obama’s domestic climate change regulations.
Dear President-elect Donald Trump, we are aware of your plans. Withdrawing the laws that ensure some safety. Removing to-be-former President Barrack Hussein Obama’s start of improvements, CO2 cuts. With a force of nature as our opposition, we need to act accordingly. Simple measures won’t be enough, slight differences won’t help and worst of all; you’re plan will be disastrous. Not only will it affect the Americans that you will be responsible for when you enter the White House, but also us, the people of the world. Acknowledge the fact that you were wrong. Acknowledge the fact that your changes might lead us into a direction where our blood will be on your hands.

Dear President-elect Donald Trump, if you’re not planning on watching Before the Flood, which I suspect you won’t, at least read this from the European premiere in London October 2016, where DiCaprio introduced the film as follows: "Before The Flood is the product of an incredible three-year journey that took place with my co-creator and director Fisher Stevens. We went to every corner of the globe to document the devastating impacts of climate change and questioned humanity's ability to reverse what may be the most catastrophic problem mankind has ever faced. There was a lot to take on. ll that we witnessed on this journey shows us that our world's climate is incredibly interconnected and that it is at urgent breaking point.(...)

Challenges with living in a foreign culture

Cultures around the globe differ significantly in a multitude of ways. They’ve all developed in different areas with different languages and different possibilities, laying the groundwork for a variety of lifestyles that aren’t very similar in terms of ways of thinking, comprehending and communicating.

Cultural differences are vast, which is why integrating someone into a culture that they previously haven’t had any encounters with might lead to misunderstandings. The main issue lies in understanding the norms of the new culture, as that is the first step towards integrating oneself into a new society. It is excessively easy to quite simply stick to what one is used to rather than trying to change your own view on life as a whole. The beliefs that everyone shared where you came from are suddenly unheard of in your new culture. This undeniably leads to a feeling of being lost and a feeling of discomfort, which is the biggest driving force towards forfeit (giving up on the idea of integrating into the new culture).

Direct contradictions between cultures are another issue that prevents integration. In the movie, The good lie, a character Jeremiah decides to give food to someone who really needed it. Jeremiah was from Sudan and had recently moved to The United States. He worked at a supermarket and was supposed to throw away old food and replace it with new food. However, despite direct orders from his supervisor, he gave the food to a starving woman instead. To Jeremiah, this was the ethically right thing to do. His boss, on the other hand, didn’t share the same views and culture, so his focus was on the economic aspect of it. This shows the clear contradictions between cultures that have derived from very different areas with a different basis for survival. Jeremiah was used to a culture of cooperation, where people worked together to survive. The owner of the supermarket grew up in the US in a time where food had never been scarce. His focus was on making the most money, which was considered much more essential in the US culture than the Sudanese culture.

My advice to the Minister of Education

ICT is everywhere these days. It communicates for us and makes everything more simple. Though it is a great tool that is constantly being used by everyone, its field of utilization could be vastly improved. Imagine an educational system where responses, help, feedback and tasks are shared from all over the world, or an interface that helps to automatically find your weaknesses and the best ways to improve those for you specifically. With today's technology, everything is possible.

At the High School I go to, Sandvika Videregående Skole, we are encouraged to use ICT as much as possible. Before starting 1st grade everyone is offered a deal with an electronic company, giving us a lower price so that most people are able to afford a computer for their attendance. We are also offered a scholarship which is enough to pay for the cheapest of the computers. This helps everyone afford a computer. Besides this, Sandvika uses many online tools to communicate with students from other countries. In our English class, we are using blogs, twitter and previously Skype. Personally, I have received comments on my blog from a Chinese student from Australia. We have used twitter to communicate with an astronaut and we are attempting to incorporate it as much as possible with our work. Sandvika is on a great path, not only by using ICT to convey with foreigners but also in the classroom, making learner more efficient. With amazing tools like Quizlet, Kahoot, Duolingo and the simplest of things like facebook, we at Sandvika experience a different learning platform. However, it can be improved. Not every teacher is as fluent with using technology and there is always room for improvement.

The technology we have today is a major aid for all students, even though not everyone uses it as much. Using technological devices like Kahoot improves a student's spirit towards learning. Kahoot is a quiz game like Quizlet.live. Making a quiz is simple and it is an awesome way of interacting with your students. In addition to simply being a simple, yet efficient aid for every teacher, it is also great for the students. Getting competitive is a fun way of learning and is also a coherent way to make everyone eager to do more.

Although ICT aids seem like all-around amazing add on to our education it has its flaws. It is great for aiding the learning process, but when it comes to concentration it is quite the opposite. With so many opportunities on a computer, you might never be certain what your students are doing on their computer. With distractions such as Facebook, Netflix and so on, us, the students, often get tempted. Now, there are ways to prohibit us from using such websites. The teachers are able to define our browser capability or just stand in the back, making it easier for them to spot whether or not a student is paying attention. But, is that really the point of using ICT? Having to force students to participate? Not at all. With ICT there are so many options that make learning so much more fun. I am aware that learning is not always possible to make fun, but it is possible to motivate the students enough for them to still be eager to take a part.

With all the technology we have today, a big issue is that the teachers are unaware of the possibilities and that they are inexperienced. Some teachers do not even know how to operate some of the programs that we are suggested to be using. Teachers should be fluent users of the technological devices, programs, and tools that are available specifically for learning. Update yourself, try something new! I am not suggested "classes" for the teachers, but more of a trial and error period where they have the opportunity to experience the program's, device's or tools' options. Most of the time nowadays, students are very aware of how these options work and how to operate them, and so should the teachers. Not only can it be confusing for the student if the teacher is unacquainted with its functions, but also embarrassing for the teacher. Hopefully, something will be done.

Looking at the schools' developments since I was a kid a lot has changed. So imagining how far we will have come within the next ten years is almost impossible. But I have hope. I hope that we have had yet another technological breakthrough within Artificial Intelligence or that we have discovered something better. Because I believe that that is the route to go. Something that can help the students figure out what they are not learning and how THEY, specifically that student, can improve themselves. A system that will know that Tom learns best if he is preparing for a presentation, that Julia learns best from watching a movie and that Henrik learns best from writing a blog post. That is the future that I believe is worth putting resources in. A future where everyone can be helped.

Media and it's effect on the election - Martin & Leon

Fox:
Fox has over 2.4 million viewers during the evening, and is described as “Republican-friendly”, though their slogan is “fair and balanced”.
Fox has a grand focus on portraying Trump as a nice, fun guy to be around. Trump is described as the most lively one, while Clinton is more annoyingly portrayed, telling bad jokes. Fox´s political views influence the articles to talk positively about Trump and negatively about Hillary Clinton.

CNN:
1.22 million viewers during the evening, airing for 36 years. Is considered neutral, but seems to portray Trump as much worse than Hillary. CNN portrays Trump as a villain and tries to dig up all the dirt they can on him, to make him appear as wicked as possible, this due to their political views. It is important to take into consideration that Trump have said some pretty nasty things, which also influences what the most neutral news channels will write about him.

Huffington Post:
Launched in 2005 as a left-oriented alternative to the conservative “Drudge report” by Arianna Huffington. Due to their political views, Huff Post constantly criticize Trump and refers to Hillary as “on fire”, portraying her as funny, smart and a correct candidate to vote for as President.

The Hill:
A newspaper with around 5,5 million viewers on Facebook and Twitter is the largest neutral newspaper covering the election. The Hill was created in 1994 and has about 24 000 daily readers on paper. Their coverage of their election is impartial which is why its reader count is so consistent.

The Rush Limbaugh Show:
As the conservative as the radio host is, The Rush Limbaugh Show gathers among 13,2 million weekly listeners. Being considered one of Donald Trumps most important supporters, his word could potentially play a huge part in the Trump voters’ mind. Beyond that, the radio show might have an effect on the listeners who are still undecided. Other than that, The Rush Limbaugh Show doesn’t really make a difference.

National Public Radio (NPR):
Being a near national radio broadcaster, NPR is an organisation consisting of 900 local radiostations that run on listeners donations.  They are a fairly neutral station and their flagship is All Things Considered, which is USAs most popular radiostation with approximant ally 13,3 million weekly listeners.

9/11 a day we will never forget

9/11 is and will always be a memorable date for all of the humanity. The occurrences are unforgivable and unforgettable. Destroying the human view on Muslims, Al-Qaida performed an act of terror dividing the east and west. Even though Al-Qaida scared and hurt as many people as they did, New Yorkers, Americans, and the whole western world came together as one reuniting like never before, creating a friendship that could stand up to the terror and pain the world was and will be put through.
All Americans have a relationship with what happened that day. The day is a brand of happiness and sorrow. Honoring the people who lost their lives that day, all Americans share feelings and prove to the world that terrorism is possible to counter. Without letting it scare us in the long run, the terrorists are no longer winning.

We just watched a documentary called 9/11, which was originally made as a documentary about a boy becoming a man, Tony, who just got out of the school for becoming a fireman. The filming was in the beginning meant to be about Tony’s transition from “a boy to a man”, but turned in to a documentary about 9/11 as soon as the two planes hit the World Trade Center. Tony didn’t get that much trust and that many assignments, in the beginning, because of his lack of experience. But, 9/11 was definitely a turning point for him. The two planes hit WTC, and Tony was told that he should carry the fire station and not go to WTC, where all the other firemen were - until a retired fireman showed up. This guy brought Tony with him to help the other police, fire, and rescuemen. We saw real fotage from the hours and minutes just after the first plane crashed in the documentary, which made our experience much more interesting. The situation seemed very real, yet surreal and therefore the legitmate footage became very moving. We got a full view of what the situation was like before, during and after the fire department did their amazing job.

What can we learn from such horrible events as the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? Have we showed the rest of the world that terrorism will never win, or have we lost by becoming scared and answering the attacks with more violence? Franklin Roosevelt said in 1933 “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. If we let the terrorists get to us, won´t that mean that they have already won?
The aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks meant a lot more security at airports, and a feeling of fear spreading across the entire western civilization. I believe the US acted wrongly after the 9/11 attacks, and milked the attacks to let them perform military operations in other countries, such as Afghanistan (2001) and Iraq (2003).
The US acting as a world police should have seen such attacks coming after treating the middle-eastern countries like trash for decades. Do not get me wrong, I do not condone terrorism and believe noone should have to go through what the people in Manhattan went through the infamous day. However, I think the US and the west had no right to create Israel, being a “big bully” to the Palestinians that had land where Israel lays today. The western countries showed the middle-eastern countries that they had absolutely no respect for them, creating enourmous conflicts between the middle-east and the west.

As a solution, I believe Israel shall cease to exist. I think no religion should get their own country preserved for them, just like I do not want it to be a Christian country or a Muslim country. I believe religion shall be a private matter, and that everyone can do what they like. France is a country I believe is doing the right thing, and is a country others should learn from.

IPN and our trip there - upcoming

IPN Is a global network of business and education, working a lot with community organizations in partnership to achieve both social and economical benefits.
My International English class is going to the 13th International education business Partnership Conference (IPN) in Lillestrøm. The conference is from the 14th to the 16th of September. There, we will listen to conferences and present how we learn through using communicative technologies.
We will talk about our experiences attending Sandvika vgs, a school that is advanced in its learning ways, using several medias as learning platforms. We are currently attending vg2, and spent a lot of 1st grade using tehcnological devices to broaden our learning oppurtunities. We also have had the chance to take Information Technology (IT) as an oppurtunitive class, a class many students have both chosen and enjoyed the first weeks. The class is extremely popular, though girls are underrepresented with 80% (approx.) in the class being boys. Attending the conference, Ellen Therese Rasmussen is representing Union Consult on the the topic girls and technology.
After our presentation, the winner of the IPN International enterprise challenge will be announced. The contest is for high school teams, and was founded in 2000. The contest has been held in many different countries, such as Scotland, Canada and South Africa, with participants from all over the world. The award is presented by NASA.

Describing themselves as “The community for science education in Europe”, is Scientix a part of the main frame of European Education. The community promotes and supports collaboration across Europe for STEM and STEM education professions. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

We are excited to meet and listen to the former NASA astronaut Richard Hieb. His experience and expertice within the aerospace industry is something we find interesting, and we are really looking forward to his speech at the International education business Partnership Conference in Lillestrøm, 16.September 2016. He will be talking about the role of space exploration in inspiring the engineers and scientists of the future, accommodated by engineer and NASA scientist, Sue Lederer. Hieb graduated from Jamestown High School, Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1973. Where he received a bachelor of arts degree in math and physics from Northwest Nazarene College in 1977, and a master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1979. After graduating from the University of Colorado Mr. Hieb went straight to NASA to work. He has logged over 750 hours in space, including 17 hours of space walk.

Climate issues and how we are able to solve them (or at least try to)

Throughout the world, we are currently going through climate changes that dramatically change the world. We have reports that the polar circles have been affected like no time before. While they are melting countries in the Middle East have experienced extremely high temperatures. So high that people in countries like Kuwait will soon have to move. Finding a solution to this problem is difficult, however, there are several options.

We often speak of cutting CO2 emissions which is a very long process and might lead to these high temperatures in countries like Kuwait. David Keith, an environmental scientist, has suggested that we use Geoengineering. A quick fix that could simply extend our time for a short period or so. Questions of whether there are major side effects or not are often asked, but we have no sure answer to what the side effects really are yet. The solution seems like a good bet, but many think the result will be ignorance towards the real and long-time issues that we are facing, reducing the CO2 levels in the atmosphere. On the other hand, Geoengineering is a cheap solution, costing only a few percent of GDP, which seems appealing.

To use Geoengineering correctly, we should consider adding laws that stop other countries from abusing this environmental force that could be very helpful, yet dangerous. The option should be spoken  about publicly, but as stated previously the option might lead to a new look on the issues and might distract people from believing that it's a real threat.

Depending on which candidate (Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton) gets elected, we will see outcomes that might prevent or ensure an environmentally healthy future for the world. Their looks on the general part of politics are not that different, however, their view upon the environmental issues. Trump believes that the climate changes are inexistent and that they mean no real threat to society or this world. Meaning that if Trump is elected Geoengineering and other solutions to this very real issue might not ever be set in motion. Clinton, on the other hand, is seemingly interested in the issues and believes a solution is needed, immediately. Therefore, electing Hillary would be the option that is the most sensible option for the environment.

Norway uses 26 494 kWh per citizen, which is extreme. Although we use an incredible amount of electricity, but 99% of all energy in Norway comes from water energy. The high waterfalls in Norway give excellent opportunities for producing energy and it is very environmentally friendly. Our largest export is oil, in the northern seas, there has been many oil findings, which has brought Norway out of poverty and making it one of the richest countries in the world. The repercussions of this is increasing oil to the word trade, and having a huge impact on CO2 releases around the entire globe.

Taking a step back and looking at the big picture most people would say that trying our best to sustain against the environmental troubles that are to come and we are facing. With political help, the case would be much easier to solve, but a lot is depending on which candidate is elected. Solutions are able to be made. A quick fix like Geoengineering could be set in motion while we slowly, but surely cut our emissions of CO2 it's likely we might survive. While that might be a solution we might end up going for a whole other route. Trump gets elected and decides for the world that we are supposed to sit back and hope for the best and it could work, but all research points towards choosing that solution we will simply end up in a horrific way. Norway is a great example for a country that is getting better with their main electricity coming from water energy, but with their largest export being oil for world trade. Simple adjustments could be made (contracts that ensure that the oil isn't used for something is harmful to the environment or the sale of oil is limited to specific amounts per month, week or year) that could make Norway's energy fully renewable.

The greater the struggle the more glorious the triumph

Throughout the film The Butterfly Circus, we meet the actor Nick who plays the role of a limbless circus actor. An actor performing to gain while feeling a loss. While he might seem happy later on in the movie, Nick had a rough start. At the beginning, we meet The limbless man. A man disowned by God, a man who barely is a man. The circus manager for The Butterfly Circus appears to be a great man in the film. He fronts himself with sayings such as If you could only see the beauty that comes from ashes and The greater the struggle the more glorious the triumph.  He seems like a wise and understanding man. Now, these quotes are quite direct towards the situation that Nick faces in the film. Nick achieves great accomplishments and nearing the end of the film he seems to be at the peek of his life. He truly reaches above and beyond every expectatins.

Civil Rights Movement

Last English class, we watched a film about how the white affected the change of equality in Mississipi. The movie is called Mississipi Burning and is to some degree a film filled with propaganda. Throughout Mississipi Burning, there are several moments when the black people are continually saved by the white and great people. So I felt the urge to tell you about the Civil Rights Movements. A series of political events that represented equality before the law.

There have been several leaders over the years of the Civil Rights movement, but one to note especially is Martin Luther King Jr. He's one of the most well-known advocates of the Civil Rights movement. His primary goal was to obtain equal rights for the black population as the white. The white at this point ruled every community known to man in America. They were the law, it's protectors and the people who made sure everyone obeyed it. With force, the white people ensured their power by just making sure every black man, woman, and child were too afraid to stand up against the higher hierarchy.

Crash

Throughout the film a lot of different emotions came up, as usually by watching a film. But at some points I felt sad, happy, shocked and shameful. These emotions were produced at big events, such as the moment when the gun was fired towards the little girl, when the young policeman killed the african-american man in his car, when he let the african-american man who'd almost been robbed get away and so on. I guess these emotions were produced due to me not having experience with happenings alike these ones, but I'm still able to somewhat relate to them.

Hemingway

Hello again,

Today I'll be telling you about the well-known journalist and author Hemingway. He lived from 1899, to 1961 and gre up in Oak Park, Chicago, with his 5 other siblings. He's often spoken of as one of the most important writers of the 20th century and most of his works are based on his experience in Europe and Cuba. He took part in a group of writers named the Lost Generation, a group of which rejected what they thought of as an American focus on acquiring possessions.

Hemingway often wrote about real events from his life and we can see a reflection of the term Fact becomes fiction. The term constitute that something of which is fictional is added to something factual or that a fact has simply been changed. However, many people believe that when something has the opportunity to become something fictional it never was a fact. But, Hemingways works are often spoken of as something like this. You could say it was in his writing style. Other than that, his writing consisted of short, simple and readable sentences, but not too simple.
